TRR 30: Research for the Sustainable Products of Tomorrow (Participation)
Type of Funding: DFG Programmes, Collaborative Research Centres
Abstract:
Functional grading is the targeted and reproducible adjustment of the microstruc- ture of a material for setting macroscopic mechanical properties (such as hardness, toughness). Target is a continuous course of the change of the microstructure of at least one spatial dimension. Seemingly contradictory properties arise at different points in the component, which specifically support the future function of the component.
Maintaining industrial production struc- tures for the mass production of high- quality goods – even under the typical high-wage conditions of Western industrialised countries – can only be achieved through extraordinary innova- tions. The SFB/Transregio TRR 30 faces this demanding future challenge. The objective of the collaborative research initiative is to achieve more flexible product geometries through differential thermal processing and the resulting special thermo-mechanical process conditions in metal and polymer forming processes, through which a major reduc- tion in process chains is possible.
