Phase field simulation of microstructure evolution: Grain growth, ripening and related issues

Reza Darvishi Kamachali, ICAMS - Ruhr-Uni-Bochum, Bochum, Germany

Results of recent phase-field simulations on the grain growth, precipitation and ripening will be presented. The outputs are compared against mean field models in terms of kinetics, distributions of size and geometry of grains/particles. The issues about steady-state solutions and self-similar distribution of the evolving entities will be discussed. It is shown that the phase-field simulation boxes are able to function as the link between the elementary theories and macroscopic models to verify their applicability and determine their intrinsic model parameters. In particular an extension of Hillert’s theory of grain growth will be outlined.
